Weber State University will open Utah’s first charter academy authorized by an institution of higher education. The academy will focus on educating children as a whole, using developmentally appropriate and research-supported curriculum and instruction.

Utah State University has been awarded a research grant from the Division of Undergraduate Education at the National Science Foundation for a project aimed at improving retention of engineering undergraduate students within the critical first two years of study. The three-year grant begins in February 2013.

SLCC is a partner in the $20 million National Information, Security, and Geospatial Technology Consortium. Funded by a U.S. Department of Labor grant, this partnership will help the College train people for new and emerging jobs in geospatial technologies.

Weber School District uses many strategies to meet the needs of academically gifted students. In order to support some of these needs, Weber School District has a self-contained gifted program at the elementary school level for 5th and 6th grade students.

Centennial Middle School was built in 1996, the year Utah celebrated its 100th birthday. Approximately 1,000 students fill up Centennial each school day, with students from Canyon Crest, Edgemont, Provost, Rock Canyon, Wasatch, Provo Peaks, and Spring Creek Elementary Schools.

With an eye toward building a globally recognized supply chain management program, Weber State University named Stanley Fawcett to the John B. Goddard Endowed Chair in Global Supply Chain Management. He is the first professor at WSU to hold the title of endowed chair.

Completion is set for Fall, 2014.

A 2012 study conducted at Utah Valley University found a connection between Facebook users and their attitudes toward their coworkers and job experiences — the more people use Facebook, the less likely they are to have strong relationships with coworkers and feel satisfied with their work.

The principals of Spanish Fork High School and Union Middle School, along with the assistant principal of Enterprise High School were named 2012-13 Utah Secondary Principals of the Year by the Utah Association of Secondary School Principals in a ceremony in Salt Lake City.

USU Eastern Blanding Campus’s commitment to helping low-income and under-represented students to prepare and successfully enter postsecondary education played heavily into a $74,000 startup grant recently awarded to the campus.

“We wanted to find out if cyberstalking is a unique crime or a variation of traditional stalking,” said Brad Reyns, criminal justice assistant professor. “Similarities in the study showed both groups experienced fear, acknowledged they were victims and had out-of-pocket costs. The difference was in the level of fear and money spent to protect themselves.”

Through the university’s Center for Alzheimer’s Care, Imaging and Research (CACIR) and a related startup company called Proactive Memory Services, the team is developing a tablet computer and smartphone application that will help Alzheimer’s patients and their families manage the disease.

Frigid weather is creating some challenges with District buses. Each day we are experiencing new trials as the cold weather takes its toll on the Bus fleet. Even though all buses are equipped with engine block heaters, in extreme conditions, sometimes even this is not enough as the fuel is turning to a gel.
