Two undergraduates from University of Utah's David Eccles School of Business who won the March 30 techTITANS Spring Idea Challenge now are talking with investors who may bankroll their business idea.

Dr. Joe Peterson, vice president for Instruction at Salt Lake Community College, was named chancellor today of the newly formed Utah State University-College of Eastern Utah. His appointment begins July 1, the date on which the merger becomes official.

Each year, thousands of kids experience the fascination of space at Utah Space Camp.  The Christa McAuliffe Space Education Center is an arts, sciences, and technology initiative of the Alpine School District located in Pleasant Grove.

A newly released Utah State University-U.S. Department of Energy study estimates that a modest 50-megawatt wind power development near Monticello in San Juan County, Utah, could generate during its construction more than $31 million in economic output for the state of Utah. It could also support 51 onsite construction jobs with a total payroll of almost $3 million, the study concludes.

The University's solid science programs continued their upward trend with mathematics moving up three spots to number 30. Other programs also held their own or advanced: chemistry at 36, biology moved up two spots to 56, computer sciences was 39, earth sciences 45, and physics 63.

UVU was recently named to the 2009 President?s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.

The Utah Campus Compact Annual Recognition Event honored Student Services Director LuAnne Forrest and her staff with its ?Committed Community Partner? award at a ceremony Friday in Salt Lake City.

Students at Amelia Earhart Elementary School learned about the seriousness and prevalence of patients suffering from leukemia and lymphoma, and other blood cancers and disorders. The Utah Legislature authorized $35 million Wednesday for the Jeffrey R. Holland Centennial Commons building. It will be the largest facility on campus with five stories and 170,000 square feet of floor space.

Researchers at the University of Utah and other institutions have sequenced for the first time the entire genome of a family, enabling them to accurately estimate the average rate at which parents pass genetic mutations to their offspring and also identify precise locations where parental chromosomes exchange information that creates new combinations of genetic traits in their children.

The College of Eastern Utah is now officially part of the Utah State University system as a result of the passage of Senate Bill 69 by the Utah State Legislature March 4. Pending the governor's signature, the passage of the bill marks the first higher education merger between two long-standing institutions in the state's history. A unanimous preliminary vote in the Senate on Friday puts the College of Eastern Utah one step closer to a proposed affiliation with Utah State University. SB69, sponsored by Sen. David Hinkins, R-Orangeville, puts the care of the two-year community college, which has struggled with enrollment numbers and finances, under the authority of the research institution in Logan, however, with a chancellor at the helm.

Through a scientific examination of the scholarly output of universities on the Web, the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities places the University of Utah at 48th best out of more than 18,000 others worldwide. That's an improvement of eight spots from the previous ranking.

A group of Weber State University students have received a grant from NASA to do some light dusting ? of the stratosphere. WSU's High Altitude Reconnaissance Balloon for Outreach and Research team has received a $25,000 grant from NASA to monitor atmospheric dust over the Wasatch Front. In particular, the researchers are trying to learn more about stratospheric aerosols, an important but poorly understood aspect of Earth's climate.
