Even though this fall's hunts are still months away, the time to apply for a permit is almost here. Applications to hunt big game animals in Utah will be accepted starting Feb. 1.

Division of Wildlife Resources personnel released 30 wild Merriam's turkeys north of Joes Valley Reservoir on Jan. 17. Although turkey populations are healthy across most of Utah, none were known to exist in the Joes Valley area prior to the release.

Two state wildlife agencies, five chambers of commerce and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) have teamed up to fight a finned invader in Flaming Gorge Reservoir.
On Nov. 10, 2012, Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Conservation Officer Brent Kasza and Branden Davis received information regarding wasted deer. Officers Kasza and Davis responded to the scene where they located four dead buck deer.

As fall progresses, cooler water temperatures make the water at all levels of a lake or reservoir more attractive to trout. The cool temperatures bring big fish to areas where anglers can catch them by casting from shore or trolling from a boat.

Only Utah residents can apply for sportsman permits. One sportsman permit is offered for each of the following species: Desert bighorn ram, Rocky Mountain bighorn ram, buck deer, buck pronghorn, bull elk, bull moose, hunter's choice bison and hunter's choice Rocky Mountain goat.

Three Colorado men sentenced in Book Cliffs illegal deer killing

A phone call to the Utah Division of Wildlife Turn-in-a-Poacher (UTiP) hotline prompted an investigation and successful prosecution of three Colorado residents in the illegal taking of a 4x4 buck and doe deer. The incident occurred three miles outside the Colorado border in Utah's Book Cliffs back in November 2011.
