SALT LAKE CITY - Extremely cold temperatures have led to a sudden spike in demand for propane, causing a shortage for homes in rural areas, including Uintah Basin and Wendover.

SALT LAKE CITY - At the Outdoor Retailer Winter Market trade show, Governor Gary R. Herbert unveiled Utah's Outdoor Recreation Vision.

SALT LAKE CITY - The First District Judicial Nominating Commission has selected nominees for a vacancy on the district court. The vacancy results from the retirement of Judge Clint S. Judkins effective  February 1, 2013.  The First Judicial District includes Box Elder, Cache and Rich counties.

SALT LAKE CITY - Lt. Governor Greg Bell has appointed Mark Thomas to serve as his Chief Deputy.  Cody Stewart, who has served as his Chief of Staff since September, 2011, will now serve full time as the energy advisor to Governor Herbert.

SALT LAKE CITY - Governor Gary R. Herbert has appointed Jeffrey C. Wilcox, Esq. to fill a vacancy on the Fifth District Court bench, which hears cases originating in Beaver, Iron and Washington Counties.

SALT LAKE CITY - Utah's economy surged ahead in November as job growth jumped to 3.1%, more than double the national average of 1.4%. The unemployment rate dropped to 5.1%.

SALT LAKE CITY - With over 165,000 Veterans and more than 1,000 deployed Army and Air National Guard members, the State of Utah has several different state agencies tasked to assist former military personnel with services and outreach. Today Governor Gary R. Herbert announced his intent to restructure how those agencies coordinate their efforts, and elevate outreach to Utah's military installations and defense-related businesses.

Utah's Presidential Electors will meet at noon on Monday, December 17th to cast their votes for President and Vice-President of the United States. The Electors will convene in the Supreme Court Chamber within the Utah State Capitol Building.

SALT LAKE CITY - During the State Of Utah's FY 2014 budget release, which includes millions of dollars in additional revenue from economic growth, Governor Gary R. Herbert was excited to announce Forbes Magazine named the Beehive State the "Best State for Business and Careers" for the third year in a row.

SALT LAKE CITY - Today the Office of Governor Gary R. Herbert announced initial changes in state agency leadership. "The Governor and senior staff have reviewed the entire Governor's Office and Cabinet in an effort to ensure the Governor's priorities are met over the next four years in a way that serves that best interests of the State," said Chief of Staff Derek Miller.

SALT LAKE CITY - Governor Gary R. Herbert has authorized the lowering of the Flag of the United States of America and the Flag of the State of Utah on Friday, December 7, 2012, in recognition of National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. The flags shall be flown at half-staff on all state facilities from sunrise to sunset on December 7 only.

SALT LAKE CITY - Today Governor Gary R. Herbert appointed David Gladwell to serve as the new chair of the Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (DABC) Commission. Gladwell has been a member of the board since 2011. With the recent confirmation of another commission member, the body will now proceed with work by the new audit and licensing subcommittees.

SALT LAKE CITY - Today Governor Gary R. Herbert appointed F. Richards Smith to fill a vacancy on the Fourth District Juvenile Court bench.

SALT LAKE CITY - Today Governor Gary R. Herbert named Akiko Kawamura the new administrator of the State's Career Service Review Office (CSRO). "Akiko's years of legal experience aptly equip her to oversee the employee grievance process," Governor Herbert said. "She will continue the CSRO's legacy of fairness and protection of employee rights."

SALT LAKE CITY - Today the Utah Olympic Exploratory Committee (UOEC) presented Governor Gary R. Herbert and Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker a 36-page report with their recommendation to pursue a bid for the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. This recommendation is based upon the decision of the US Olympic Committee (USOC) to consider submitting a Winter Games bid in 2026.

SALT LAKE CITY - Utah's unemployment rate dropped to 5.4% for the month of September, following another month of steady job growth as the state continues to show strong recovery from the recession.

SALT LAKE CITY - Today, Governor Gary R. Herbert announced his plan to ensure Utah is on pace to have 66 percent of the adult population earn a post-secondary degree or certification by the year 2020. This plan is called "On PACE to 66% by 2020."

SALT LAKE CITY - The Fourth District Judicial Nominating Commission has selected nominees for a vacancy on the juvenile court. The vacancy results from the retirement of Judge Sterling B. Sainsbury effective December 1, 2012.  The Fourth Judicial District includes Juab, Millard, Utah and Wasatch counties.

SALT LAKE CITY - Governor Gary R. Herbert announced today he has selected Mark VanOrden to serve as Executive Director of the Department of Technology Services and the state's Chief Information Officer (CIO). VanOrden has been serving as the acting Executive Director, and was chosen to permanently fill the position for his exemplary leadership and his notable skills in information technology.

SALT LAKE CITY - Governor Gary R. Herbert and his staff took time off today to serve at the Utah Food Bank. While there, the Governor declared September 29, 2012, Hunger Action Day to heighten awareness of the fourth annual Hunger Action Month Food Drive being held tomorrow at Walmart stores statewide.

PARK CITY - On the heels of the College Board releasing Advanced Placement (AP) data for the 2012 school year, Governor Gary R. Herbert, in collaboration with his Education Excellence Commission and Prosperity 2020, recognized Park City High School (PCHS) as the top AP school in the State. The school was awarded possession of the History of Utah book, the Top AP traveling trophy, for their accomplishments.

SALT LAKE CITY - Today is National Voter Registration Day, and with Election Day just 42 days away, the Utah Lt. Governor's Office is launching its mass media campaign to encourage all eligible Utahns to register to vote and become informed voters.

SALT LAKE CITY, UT - The State of Utah's latest jobs report shows continued economic growth and a reduction in the unemployment rate for the month of August.

SANTA CLARA, UT - Utah Governor Gary R. Herbert today declared a State of Emergency for Utah and signed a letter requesting President Barack Obama issue a presidential disaster declaration for the state due to the recent flooding in southern Utah. If approved by the President, Utah would become eligible for federal disaster assistance for public infrastructure.

SALT LAKE CITY - More good news for Utah's economy: Utah Governor Gary R. Herbert and Treasurer Richard K. Ellis announced today the affirmation of the State's "AAA" general obligation bond rating by all three bonding agencies - Standard & Poor's, Moody's Investors Service, and Fitch Ratings. Utah is one of only seven states to earn a AAA bond rating by all three of the rating agencies, also known as a "triple-triple" rating.

 SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Lieutenant Governor Greg Bell has joined the Heroes Vote Initiative to promote National Military Voter Readiness Day on September 15, 2012.  With state deadlines for registering and requesting an absentee ballot fast approaching, National Military Voter Readiness Day was created to help make sure that military voters are election ready.

SALT LAKE CITY - On Wednesday, September 12, Governor Gary R. Herbert appointed Barry Lawrence to fill a vacancy on the Third District Court. The vacancy results from the retirement of Judge William W. Barrett effective November 1, 2012.

SALT LAKE CITY - Governor Gary R. Herbert authorized the lowering of the Flag of the United States of America and the Flag of the State of Utah until September 16, 2012, as a mark of respect for the memory of John Christopher Stevens, United States Ambassador to Libya, and American personnel killed in the attack on the American diplomatic facility in Benghazi.
