SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Governor Gary R. Herbert today formally requested President Obama re-open the state's five national parks, several national monuments, historic sites and recreation areas.

SALT LAKE CITY - Governor Gary R. Herbert's annual Utah Health Summit was dominated by discussion surrounding whether the state should choose to expand its Medicaid program under the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  More than 400 business, community, education, and government leaders were on hand for the governor's third summit, the focus of which was continuing to develop Utah-based solutions to the state's health care challenges.

SALT LAKE CITY - The Fourth District Judicial Nominating Commission has selected nominees for a vacancy on the juvenile court. The vacancy results from the retirement of Judge Kay A. Lindsay effective December 1, 2013.  The Fourth Judicial District includes Juab, Millard, Utah and Wasatch counties.

SALT LAKE CITY - The Appellate Judicial Nominating Commission has selected nominees for a vacancy on the Utah Court of Appeals. The vacancy results from the retirement of Judge William A. Thorne, Jr. on September 15, 2013.

SALT LAKE CITY - Today Governor Gary R. Herbert named Ann Silverberg Williamson the executive director of the Utah Department of Human Services. 

SALT LAKE CITY - Another sign of Utah's growing economy: More cash on hand.  Utah Governor Gary R. Herbert today announced today the State of Utah ended Fiscal Year 2013 with a revenue surplus of $242 million, all in Education Funds (EF).

SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Lt. Governor Greg Bell announced this morning he is stepping down as Utah's seventh lieutenant governor. After four years in his present post and 23 years in public service, Bell has decided to return to the private sector.

SALT LAKE CITY - The Appellate Nominating Commission has scheduled a meeting for September 9, 2013 at noon to review applications of individuals interested in filling the judicial vacancy on the Utah Court of Appeals resulting from the pending retirement of Judge William A. Thorne, Jr. The Commission will meet in suite 330 of the Senate Building on Capitol Hill in Salt Lake City.

SALT LAKE CITY - The Second District Judicial Nominating Commission has selected nominees for a vacancy on the juvenile court. The vacancy results from the retirement of Judge Paul F. Iwasaki, effective September 16, 2013. The Second Judicial District includes Davis, Morgan, and Weber counties.

SALT LAKE CITY - Utah's economy picked up steam in July, adding even more jobs to the work force and dropping unemployment to far below the national average, according to figures released today by the Utah Department of Workforce Services.

SALT LAKE CITY - Joshua Haines has been named the new director of the Division of Facilities Construction and Management, a division of the Utah Department of Administrative Services.  The appointment follows an extensive nationwide search.

SALT LAKE CITY - The director of the Utah Sentencing Commission, Jacey Skinner, will serve a second term as director and president of the National Association of Sentencing Commissions (NASC). The executive committee re-elected Skinner to serve through 2014.

SALT LAKE CITY - In response to an emergency request for assistance from the Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands, Utah Governor Gary R. Herbert has authorized deployment of Utah National Guard resources as part of the air assault to combat the State and Millville fires. The State Fire is near the town of Portage in Box Elder County, close to the Utah-Idaho border, and the Millville Fire is in Cache County, just south of Logan.

SALT LAKE CITY - Today Governor Gary R. Herbert appointed Alan Matheson State Planning Coordinator. 

SALT LAKE CITY — Governor Gary R. Herbert was renamed to the National Governors Association (NGA) Executive Committee by NGA Chair Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin and NGA Vice Chair Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper.

SALT LAKE CITY - The Public Lands Policy Coordination Office will host a public meeting on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 to discuss public lands issues and possible solutions. A panel of researchers from the University of Utah and Utah State University will be present to discuss and receive information, which could be useful in an economic analysis of the transfer of federal lands to State ownership.

SALT LAKE CITY - The Eighth District Judicial Nominating Commission has selected nominees for one vacancy on the district court and two vacancies on the juvenile court. The vacancies result from the establishment of two new judicial positions and the retirement of Judge Larry A. Steele from the juvenile court. The Eighth Judicial District includes Daggett, Duchesne and Uintah counties.

SALT LAKE CITY - The First District Judicial Nominating Commission has selected nominees for a vacancy on the district court. The vacancy results from the retirement of Judge Clint S. Judkins. The First Judicial District includes Box Elder, Cache and Rich counties.

SALT LAKE CITY-The Utah Elections Office has selected the law firm Snell & Wilmer to serve as special counsel to investigate allegations of election law violations against Utah Attorney General John Swallow.

SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Governor Gary R. Herbert has authorized the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the great State of Utah on all state facilities, Saturday, July 20, in honor of Vernon Bradford Romney. Romney served two terms as Utah's Attorney General from 1969-1977. He passed away July 13, 2013, in Salt Lake City.

SALT LAKE CITY - Governor Gary R. Herbert has ordered the Flag of the United States of America and the Flag of the State of Utah to be lowered on July 15, 2013 to honor First Sergeant Tracy L. Stapley who died July 3, 2013, in Doha, Qatar. The lowering of the Flags will be done in conjunction with the memorial services being held that day.

SALT LAKE CITY - The 1st District Judicial Nominating Commission has scheduled a meeting for July 15, 2013 at 12:30 pm to review applications of individuals interested in filling the judicial vacancy resulting from the retirement of Judge Clint Judkins. The Commission will meet in the second floor conference room of the Bear River Health Department located at 655 East 1300 North in Logan.

SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Governor Gary R. Herbert departed today for a trade mission to the United Kingdom. Scheduled July 7-10, the trip will focus on strengthening current business relationships, expanding Utah's global reach, and sharing best practices for a stronger workforce through innovation and education.
