SALT LAKE CITY- (January 28, 2014) Governor Gary R. Herbert has named Wesley Smith as director of state and federal relations.

SALT LAKE CITY (Jan. 26, 2014) -  Governor Gary R. Herbert has appointed Tupakk A.G. Renteria to fill a vacancy on the Third District Juvenile Court.

SALT LAKE CITY— (Jan. 24, 2014) Utah's unemployment rate dropped again over December, now measuring 4.1 percent, far below the national average of 6.7 percent. The Utah economy added 22,500 jobs over the last year, and is on track for continued steady growth through 2014.

SALT LAKE CITY – The Second District Judicial Nominating Commission has selected nominees for a vacancy on the district court. The vacancy results from the retirement of Judge Michael D. Lyon, effective September 1, 2013. The Second Judicial District includes Davis, Morgan, and Weber counties.

SALT LAKE CITY – (Jan. 21, 2014) Gov. Gary R. Herbert has named Tami Pyfer as his education advisor.

The announcement that the Department of Justice will recognize same-sex marriages performed in Utah comes as no surprise and is consistent with previous direction to state agencies.

SALT LAKE CITY – The Fifth District Judicial Nominating Commission has selected nominees for a vacancy on the district court. The vacancy results from the retirement of Judge James L. Shumate effective March 31, 2014.  The Fifth Judicial District includes Beaver, Iron and Washington counties.

SALT LAKE CITY (Jan. 8, 2014) – The Governor's Chief of Staff Derek Miller sent the following email to Cabinet Members last night providing direction on the status of same-sex marriages in Utah:

SALT LAKE CITY (Jan. 6, 2014) – Gov. Gary Herbert has announced the appointment of former Lieutenant Governor Greg Bell as chair of the Utah Science Technology and Research (USTAR) Governing Authority. Bell, now president and CEO of the Utah Hospital Association, takes the place of outgoing chair Dinesh Patel, a business leader who has led USTAR since its inception in 2006.

FROM GOVERNOR GARY R. HERBERT:
"The Supreme Court made the correct decision to stay Judge Shelby's ruling in the Amendment 3 case. Clearly, the stay should have been granted with the original District Court decision in order to have avoided the uncertainty created by this unprecedented change."

SALT LAKE CITY - (Dec. 24, 2013) The Governor's Office sent the following email to Cabinet Members today in regards to issues stemming from the recent federal court rulings on Amendment 3 to the Utah State Constitution:

Acting Attorney General Brian Tarbet:
"Following Judge Shelby's decision to decline our Motion of Stay, the state of Utah renewed its request for a Motion of Stay before the Tenth Circuit Court.

SALT LAKE CITY - (Dec. 23, 2013) Governor Gary R. Herbert has named Sean D. Reyes, Esq. as attorney general to replace recently resigned John Swallow. Reyes will serve as Utah's attorney general through 2014.

FROM GOVERNOR GARY R. HERBERT:
"I am very disappointed an activist federal judge is attempting to override the will of the people of Utah. I am working with my legal counsel and the acting Attorney General to determine the best course to defend traditional marriage within the borders of Utah."

SALT LAKE CITY – (Dec. 20, 2013) Governor Gary R. Herbert has named LuAnn Adams as commissioner of the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food. Adams has served as Box Elder County Commissioner since 2011. She also worked 16 years as the Box Elder County Recorder/Clerk.

SALT LAKE CITY – (Dec. 20, 2013) New figures released today by the Dept. of Workforce Services show Utah's unemployment rate dropped to 4.3 percent, that figure is significantly lower than the national average and ranks Utah fourth lowest among all states. Utah's private sector job growth remains second in the nation, with nearly all private sector industries showing year-over growth.

SALT LAKE CITY - The Third District Judicial Nominating Commission has selected nominees for a vacancy on the juvenile court. The vacancy results from the retirement of Judge Andrew A. Valdez on November 1, 2013. The Third Judicial District includes Salt Lake, Summit and Tooele counties.

SALT LAKE CITY – Governor Gary R. Herbert has authorized the lowering of the Flag of the United States of America and the Flag of the State of Utah, December 6-9, in remembrance of those who died at Pearl Harbor 72 years ago, and in memory of Nelson Mandela.

SALT LAKE CITY - Kansas Governor Sam Brownback and Utah Governor Gary R. Herbert will exchange a state-related gift pending the outcome of Saturday's Major League Soccer Championship game. Sporting Kansas City will be taking on Real Salt Lake in Kansas City on Saturday, Dec. 7.

SALT LAKE CITY – Governor Gary R. Herbert has named Marty Carpenter to his senior staff as director of communication.

Governor Gary R. Herbert will unveil his proposed budget for fiscal year 2015.

STATEMENT FROM GOVERNOR GARY R. HERBERT:
"I received a letter of resignation from Utah Attorney General John Swallow this morning.  John's decision is in the best interests of his family, his constituents and the State of Utah..."

SALT LAKE CITY – The Governor's legal team will soon be changing. The Utah State Senate has unanimously confirmed the nomination of John A. Pearce, general counsel for Governor Gary R. Herbert, to the Utah Court of Appeals.

SALT LAKE CITY - Governor Gary R. Herbert's deputy chief of staff, communications director and spokesperson, Ally Isom, will step down this Friday. Isom has been with the Governor's Office for three years.

SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Governor Gary R. Herbert has signed the official letter to appoint Jon Cox to Utah House District 58 in the Utah State Legislature.  The appointment comes at the recommendation of the Republican Party delegates who selected Cox, a Sanpete County Commissioner, to replace Spencer J. Cox, who now serves as Utah Lieutenant Governor.

SALT LAKE CITY – Governor Gary R. Herbert issued an executive order today calling for an analysis of Veteran employment among state agencies and prompting department heads to find ways to hire more veterans.

SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Commissioner of Agriculture and Food, Leonard M. Blackham, has announced his intent to retire in early January 2014, following a noteworthy 25-year public service career.

The event is entitled, "The Governor's Salute to Robert Redford: A Utah Tribute to an American Icon."

SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah State Senate just confirmed State Representative Spencer J. Cox (R - Dist. 58) as the eighth lieutenant governor of Utah. Cox was appointed by Governor Gary R. Herbert on Oct. 8 to replace outgoing Lt. Governor Greg Bell.


SALT LAKE CITY - Today Governor Gary R. Herbert announced the creation of the Clean Air Action Team (CAAT). This group of diverse individuals will gather research, work with the public and recommend practical and effective strategies to improve Utah's air quality.

Salt Lake City - Today Governor Gary R. Herbert signed a proclamation convening the Utah Legislature into Special Session to address some legislative issues on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013, at 2:30 p.m.

SALT LAKE CITY - Today Utah Governor Gary R. Herbert announced a deal has been reached with the U.S. Department of Interior to re-open the State's five national parks, Cedar Breaks and Natural Bridges national monuments, and the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

During the Governor's first ever statewide education faculty meeting, educators and administrators will learn more about Utah's educational goals and priorities, and what role their efforts play in reaching the Governor's "On PACE" 66% by 2020 goal. The faculty meeting will be broadcast live on KUED Channel 7, KUEN Channel 9, KBYU Channel 11, and streamed www.uen.org and www.utah.gov.

SALT LAKE CITY - Today Utah Governor Gary R. Herbert named State Representative Spencer J. Cox (R - Dist. 58) of Fairview to replace Greg Bell as lieutenant governor. The Governor doesn't expect the administration to miss a beat in this historic transition.
