Since 1973, the Utah prairie dog has been listed as endangered under the federal Endangered Species Act. In late 2014, a ruling in federal court returned management authority for Utah prairie dogs back to the state.

At a meeting on Jan. 5, the Utah Wildlife Board approved new hunting opportunities in Utah. The board approved the changes after 91 bears had to be euthanized because they posed a threat to people, sheep or cattle, in 2014.

There are now 73 condors in the wild in Arizona and Utah, including the two new fledglings. A total of 25 chicks have hatched in the wild since condors were first reintroduced in Arizona in 1996.
