The Utah State University USTAR team Veterinary Diagnostics and Infectious Disease team will host two seminar presentations this coming week. Faculty members are encouraged to attend. The first seminar, presented by Dr. Graca Almeida-Porada, professor in the department of animal biotechnology at the University of Nevada, Reno, is scheduled to be held July 26, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. in the Merrill-Cazier Library, room 154.

Utah is taking steps forward in the renewable energy economy. While the state continues to actively support the traditional energy industry, over the last two years, it has seen a significant increase in renewable energy companies making significant investments in the State.
The Utah Fund of Funds with partners MBRC, GOED and USTAR have announced they will present a six-part training series on Fund Raising. The six part series can be attended as a group, or ala carte. The cost for all six parts is $75, or you can attend any of the six for $25 each. To get the $75 deal you must register before May 26. The training sessions will be held at the Miller Business Resource Center SLCC Miller Campus.

A major Skagit County manufacturer has announced plans to build a facility in Utah to support its work in the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program. Janicki Industries' new $19.5 million Utah facility will make precision composites for the military aircraft and expects to add about 50 people to the company in the next few years.

Oracle has resumed construction on a major facility in West Jordan, Utah to meet the needs of its growing customer base. Construction on the approximately 180,000 square feet data center began a little over a year ago.
The Governor's Economic Summit held March 29th and was the fourth annual gathering of over 1000 business leaders from around the State.

The Space Weather Center at USU will be releasing two new capabilities for existing SWC innovations at the annual Space Weather Workshop meeting in Boulder, Colorado, April 27-30, 2010. SpaceWx, an iPhone app developed by USU's Space Weather Center is scheduled to release the upgraded v1.4.0 via Apple next week. First released in 2009, this app upgrade includes real-time effects from the four major space weather domains.

The Utah Science Technology and Research initiative (USTAR) is slated to receive $33 million through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) for use in fiscal years 2010 and 2011. The majority of the funding augments research and commercialization efforts at the University of Utah (U of U) and Utah State University (USU) in fields such as energy, nanotechnology, medical imaging, biopharma, and digital media.

With a typical award size of $30,000, USTAR Technology Commercialization Grants (TCGs) will assist regional and research higher education faculty to prototype, test, assess markets, and commercialize new products and services in high-growth markets. Federal funding for energy-related projects has exploded, providing Utah opportunities to leverage existing strengths and create jobs in the new energy economy. Through the end of 2009, USTAR's Technology Outreach team coordinated and supported $1.1 billion in grant applications, for USTAR and non-USTAR entities. Utah-supported applicants have won more than $40 million in new research funding so far, with an additional $450 million pending.

The International Trade and Diplomacy Office (ITDO) of the Governor?s Office of Economic Development is pleased with its 2009 year-end commodity export figures as announced by the U.S. Department of Commerce. Utah companies exported over $10.3 billion in 2009 which equaled their export dollars from 2008.

Production agriculture and the agricultural processing and manufacturing sectors are important elements of the economy in the state of Utah. These economic sectors contribute jobs, income, fiscal revenues, and quality of life to not only rural regions of the state, but also to its more urbanized regions. The agricultural processing sector and the production agriculture sector together account for $15.2 billion in total economic output in Utah after adjusting for multiplier effects.

Utah's first business incubator focused on IT and renewable energy opened its doors in mid-January near the campus of Dixie State College in St. George. A collaborative effort spearheaded by USTAR, the Southern Utah Information Technology and Renewable Energy Incubator (ITRE) helps Utah join several other states and cities investing in the start-up of new businesses focused on high technology, green technology and alternative energy.
