Governor Names New General Counsel, DWS Director
Salt Lake City, Utah - Utah Governor Jon Huntsman announced Tani Pack Downing as the new General Counsel in the Office of the Governor. Downing currently serves as the Executive Director of the Department of Workforce Services.
Governor Huntsman has named Kristen Cox, former Secretary of Disabilities for Maryland, as Downing's replacement at Workforce Services.
Governor Nominates 3rd District Judge
Salt Lake City, Utah - Utah Governor Jon M. Huntsman, Jr. has nominated Michele M. Christiansen of Salt Lake City, Utah, to serve as a judge on the Utah Third District Court. If confirmed by the Utah Senate, Christiansen will replace Judge Leslie Lewis.
Governor Opts Not to Sign SB 155
Salt Lake City - Governor Jon Huntsman signed 9 bills and issued the following statement regarding Senate Bill 155 today:
As Governor, I will allow SB155 to go into effect without my signature. I do so in part because of the need to recognize the "grandfather" status of an existing facility. The bill is simply a technical clarification of current practice. It is not the legislation that concerns me, but the nuclear waste industry and its impact on Utah.

Cancellation of Proposed Divine Strake Experiment
The Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) has decided to cancel the proposed Divine Strake experiment. "I have become convinced that it's time to look at alternative methods that obviate the need for this type of large-scale test," said DTRA Director Dr. James A. Tegnelia. This decision was not based on any technical information that indicates the test would produce harm to workers, the general public, or the environment.
Governor Huntsman: Divine Strake Defeated
Salt Lake City - Governor Jon Huntsman declared a victory for Utah today, announcing the Defense Threat Reduction Agency had canceled the Divine Strake experiment.
"This is an expression of the will of the people and a huge victory for all Utahns," Governor Huntsman said. "This isn't a political achievement as much as a reflection of democracy at work. The people of Utah made their voices heard and those in Washington listened. It's an extremely consequential outcome and a great day for Utahns."
Governor Huntsman Signs Ethics Executive Order
Salt Lake City - Governor Jon Huntsman signed an Executive Order establishing an Ethics Policy for Executive Branch agencies and employees today.
The policy includes a prohibition against the receipt of gifts, a prohibition against nepotism in hiring and contracting and a prohibition against lobbying Executive Branch department or agency employees by former employees.

Governor Nominates 7th District Judge
Salt Lake City, Utah - Utah Governor Jon Huntsman has nominated Douglas B. Thomas to serve as a judge on the Utah Seventh District Court. Upon confirmation by the Utah State Senate, Thomas will replace retiring Judge Bruce Halliday.
"Doug has the right combination of qualities that will make him a great judge, he has a keen legal mind and a solid record as a court commissioner," Governor Huntsman said. "Doug will be a tremendous asset to the 7th District."
Chris Roybal to Leave Governor's Office
Salt Lake City - Governor Jon Huntsman announced today his Senior Economic Development Advisor Chris Roybal will end his tenure in the Office of the Governor to take a position as President and Chief Operating Officer at a Salt Lake-based transportation services company.
Roybal was one of Governor Huntsman's first appointments when he was elected in November 2004. He left as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Economic Development Corporation of Utah to serve on the Governor's senior staff.

Governor Huntsman announces new Corrections Executive Director
Salt Lake City - Governor Jon Huntsman asked Tom Patterson to head the Department of Corrections today. Scott Carver, currently Correction's Executive Director, has accepted the position of Director of the Utah Sentencing Commission within the Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice (CCJJ).
Patterson has served as executive director of CCJJ since July. Retired Judge Bob Yeates will move from the Sentencing Commission to take Patterson's place as CCJJ executive director.
