Human ingenuity eventually seems to catch up with the most far-out ideas ever concocted in comic books, in science fiction action films, and in the minds of the likes of Leonardo da Vinci. Sometimes it just takes a while—a long while, in many cases—for the formerly make-believe to make believers out of skeptics. Three projects at the University of Utah aren’t necessarily anywhere near the last stage of development, yet each has already pushed one boundary after another.

The University of Utah Department of Physics & Astronomy is hosting a film festival once per month all year. Free and open to the public! Free popcorn will be provided!

USU Press Puts eBooks on Web

Utah State University Press is taking advantage of cutting-edge technology by making dozens of books available online.

In June, the publishing house began using Digital Editions, a free software program from Adobe, to release e-books.

All together, 110 books will be offered. Most of them have already been published in traditional from, though USU Press also put out the first volume in an online-only series.

The Utah State Office of Education has convened a Mathematics Steering Committee to develop a Master Plan to facilitate opportunity by which all Utah’s students might reach their academic and career potential.

Principals' Data Institute

Schools from across the state are being invited to send teams to the 2009 Principals' Data Institute.  The 3-day program is designed to help schools use data to improve instruction and increase student achievement.

The Granite School District has a new way to reach out to students and parents.  The school district's YouTube channel provides video on a many different topics such as safety and diversity.

While all good stories have a beginning, middle and end, the story of Jordan School District is still being written.  As the next chapter unfolds, founding principles of providing a quality education and promoting lifelong learning will guide the district's future.

Real Salt Lake will be hosting the Toronto FC on Saturday, June 27, 2009.  Discount tickets are available.

The Utah Educational Savings Plan (UESP) was ranked as one of the top five 529 college savings plans in the country. Morningstar, an investment research firm, stated that “Utah’s 529 plan has long been a favorite of ours and remains a strong choice for its low costs, flexibility, and tried-and-true Vanguard index funds.

The Utah State Board of Education today named Larry Shumway as State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Shumway will assume his new job on July 1 following the retirement of Patti Harrington.
