Most of Utah's major roads pass through or travel along ranges deer and elk use in the winter. During the winter, deer and elk can be active throughout the day. But they're most active near dawn and dusk?exactly when visibility is at its worst.

Zion National Park is currently closed as a precaution due to rising river levels and potential flood damage to roads and infrastructure. The Zion Lodge and Watchman Campground in Zion Canyon are being evacuated to prevent the possibility of park visitors being trapped in the park by rising water levels.

They have been extinct for millions of years, but Utah dinosaurs are having a record breaking year. Today the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Utah Geological Survey (UGS), and Temple University announce the naming of the seventh dinosaur from BLM Utah in 2010. Geminiraptor suarezarum, found on BLM lands near Green River, UT, is the oldest reported ?raptor-like? troodontid dinosaur in North America (125 million years old).

A tip on the state's poaching hotline has allowed wildlife officers to break a major poaching ring in Utah. Even though officers are happy with the arrest, they say there's still a lot of work to do to curtail poaching in Utah. With only 48 patrol officers in the state, Wood says the DWR doesn't have the resources needed to catch everyone on its own.

Soldier Hollow in Wasatch Mountain State Park near Midway offers the longest tubing lanes in Utah. The hill has lengthy 1,200-foot sliding lanes with lift service for towing people up the hill for tubing day or night under the lights, and a sound system keeps the airwaves full of enjoyable tunes.

Seven deer have been poached recently in the Book Cliffs in eastern Utah. Now officers with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources are asking for your help to find those responsible.

The map identifies important range-wide focal areas having high density occurrences of greater sage-grouse, a ground-dwelling bird that inhabits much of the West. These focal areas were determined by estimating the male?s attendance on leks, the communal breeding grounds of the bird. The BLM will work with the state fish and wildlife agencies to further refine the map by incorporating more specific state-level data.

After a series of public meetings, the state's Regional Advisory Councils are split over which deer hunting option they prefer. The Utah Wildlife Board will make the final decision when it meets in Salt Lake City on Dec. 2.

Under the new plan, some of the limited-entry areas would become harvest-objective areas. The number of hunters who can hunt on a harvest-objective area isn't limited, so switching an area to harvest objective would increase the number of people who can hunt the area. Letting more hunters hunt an area would increase the chance that a set number of bears were taken.

Winter is here, along with plenty of Utah snow.  Utah is home to some of the best winter resorts and activities in the country.

It's the time of year when rams charge into each other, slamming their horns together in a spectacular head-butting ritual that's designed to attract the attention of the ladies (female sheep called ewes).

Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry contains the densest concentration of Jurassic-aged dinosaur bones ever found. The deposit is also the largest collection of a large meat-eating dinosaur ever found.

On Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, the Willard Bay Wildlife Management Area (WMA) will be closed to general public access to accommodate the annual one-day youth pheasant hunt. The youth hunt previously has been held at a Walk-In-Access area.

Swan hunters: It shouldn't be long now. During an aerial survey on Nov. 2, 2010, Tom Aldrich counted 14,793 swans in marshes along the eastern shore of the Great Salt Lake.

The Division of Wildlife Resources will present some major changes for the 2011 hunt at public meetings in November. Those changes could affect the number of bucks you see and the ability you and your family have to hunt.

If you've ever thought about hunting quail in Utah, this fall might be the time to give it a try. California quail and Gamble's quail populations have done well in Utah the past few years and appear to be doing better this year.

Applications for next year's most prized Utah hunting permits ? 2011 sportsman permits ? will be available by Nov. 1. Only Utah residents may apply for sportsman permits. One sportsman permit is offered for each of the following species: Desert bighorn ram, Rocky Mountain bighorn ram, buck deer, buck pronghorn, bull elk, bull moose, hunter's choice bison, hunter's choice Rocky Mountain goat, black bear, cougar and wild turkey.

The Division of Wildlife Resources will be conducting three projects to eliminate undesirable fish in Southern Utah in the near future.

The 'Wild West' returns to Antelope Island State Park! Join us for the 24th Annual Bison Roundup, Friday, October 29 and Saturday, October 30, 2010. Volunteer wranglers will saddle-up and move the park's herd of 600 free-roaming bison from the southern tip of the Island to the bison corrals on the northern end of the island.

Kamas fish hatchery closes

"Whirling disease has been detected in the creek above the hatchery," says Walt Donaldson, Aquatic Section chief for the Division of Wildlife Resources. "We don't think whirling disease made it into the hatchery. But we're not taking any chances."

Many lakes and streams in the Uintas are managed as recreational fisheries, and they contain a large variety of trout species. The mountains? trout residents include brook, cutthroat, golden, rainbow and tiger, ...

If you're hunting in southwestern Utah, where deep snow covered the deer's winter range, you might see fewer young bucks.

Hunting and OHVs

Off-highway vechicles (OHVs) are a convenient form of transportation to hunting areas. However, with the increased number of registered OHVs used during hunting seasons, it is vital for hunters to know and obey OHV laws and rules for their own safety and the safety of others.

Members of the Utah Wildlife Board want hunters to see more buck deer during Utah's general hunts. That goal has led the Division of Wildlife Resources to put on hold big game hunting ideas it's shared with hunters over the past several months.

This year's waterfowl hunt starts Oct. 2, 2010. Tom Aldrich, migratory game bird coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources, says most of the ducks Utah hunters take at the start of the season are locally produced birds.

Dave Olsen, upland game coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources, says rain that fell last spring and early summer provided the birds with better habitat. He says good spring and early summer moisture is critical to upland game birds.

Children will enjoy pony rides, a petting corral, Pioneer Playground, a mini-train ride and take-home crafts. Parents and kids alike can ride the larger replica trains, explore the Native American village or visit Brigham Young's original farm house. Food, drinks and treats are available at the Monument Café, Huntsman Hotel and Z.C.M.I. general store.

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources will host Kokanee Salmon Day at Sheep Creek on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010 at the Scenic Byway turnout where Sheep Creek crosses under Highway 44.
