SALT LAKE CITY - Just after 2 p.m. today, Governor Gary R. Herbert issued a proclamation convening the Utah Legislature in a Special Session to address six legislative issues and confirm appointments. The session, to be held next Wednesday, July 20, at 2 p.m., is scheduled for a regular legislative interim day.

SALT LAKE CITY - In an effort to encourage fiscal responsibility and prudence at the federal level, Utah Governor Herbert has signed the Cut, Cap and Balance pledge. Three other governors joined Governor Herbert: Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX), Gov. Nikki Haley (R-SC), and Gov. Sean Parnell (R-AK).
SALT LAKE CITY - Today, Utah Governor Gary Herbert received notification of the death of Specialist Preston J. Suter of Sandy, Utah. Specialist Suter died on July 5, 2011, in Paktia Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. According to an announcement released by the U.S. Army, Specialist Suter died of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his military vehicle.
SALT LAKE CITY - The 3rd District Judicial Nominating Commission has scheduled a meeting for July 13 to review applications of individuals interested in filling judicial vacancies resulting from the pending retirement of Judge Glenn Iwasaki and Judge Joseph Fratto, Jr. The Commission will meet in room 330 of the Utah Senate Building.

The Governor's declaration opens the door for state resources to be deployed to local communities affected by the disaster.
