Utah Valley University officials today released details regarding the $54 million Utah State Legislature-approved classroom building that will give students on the institution’s space-strapped campus some much-needed breathing room. The classroom building was approved by the House and Senate last week at the close of the Legislature’s 2013 session and awaits the signature of Gov. Gary Herbert.

SUU’s honor students are searching for dynamic presenters with extraordinary ideas among the University’s faculty, students, staff and alumni for the TEDxSUU event they will host on campus, slated for March 27. A local, independent event based on and licensed by TED (technology, entertainment and design), TEDx events provide a platform for anybody to share their ideas and expertise with the community and the world.

Utah’s new Higher Education Tuition Waiver law, adopted last week, is designed to help keep Utah college enrollment numbers up, countering the recent policy change by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which lowered the minimum missionary age and drew students away from Utah colleges and universities.

For more than a month they have been learning how to propose, argue and pass a bill in their own little legislature in Mrs. McKnight’s fourth-grade classroom at Hayden Peak Elementary.

The results are in. Afras Sial, a student at Skyline High School is the Utah first place winner and national seventh place winner of the SIFMA Foundation’s InvestWrite® student essay competition. Sial is a student in the Financial Literacy course taught by Syd Lott.

The David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah made the biggest jump among the university’s graduate programs in this year’s edition of “America’s Best Grad Schools 2014,” published by U.S. News & World Report, moving up an impressive 23 spots from the year before.

Utah State University has been awarded a research grant from the Division of Undergraduate Education at the National Science Foundation for a project aimed at improving retention of engineering undergraduate students within the critical first two years of study. The three-year grant begins in February 2013.

SLCC is a partner in the $20 million National Information, Security, and Geospatial Technology Consortium. Funded by a U.S. Department of Labor grant, this partnership will help the College train people for new and emerging jobs in geospatial technologies.

Weber School District uses many strategies to meet the needs of academically gifted students. In order to support some of these needs, Weber School District has a self-contained gifted program at the elementary school level for 5th and 6th grade students.

Centennial Middle School was built in 1996, the year Utah celebrated its 100th birthday. Approximately 1,000 students fill up Centennial each school day, with students from Canyon Crest, Edgemont, Provost, Rock Canyon, Wasatch, Provo Peaks, and Spring Creek Elementary Schools.

With an eye toward building a globally recognized supply chain management program, Weber State University named Stanley Fawcett to the John B. Goddard Endowed Chair in Global Supply Chain Management. He is the first professor at WSU to hold the title of endowed chair.

Completion is set for Fall, 2014.

A 2012 study conducted at Utah Valley University found a connection between Facebook users and their attitudes toward their coworkers and job experiences — the more people use Facebook, the less likely they are to have strong relationships with coworkers and feel satisfied with their work.
